The Academic Board of the University of Ghana, the second highest decision making body of the university has directed management to take legal action against the National Security Coordinator Rtd Colonel Larry Gbevlo-Lartey and his team for unlawfully demolishing a toll booth and security post on the university premises.
Heavily armed police men were said to have demolished the two structures around 1:30 am Tuesday under the instruction of the national security coordinator.
Col. Larry Gbevlo-Lartey later justified the action on Joy FM with the excuse that the toll booth was wrongly sited and was nothing more than a nuisance to the public.
According to him, the collection of tolls at the Okponglo area of the university campus was creating unnecessary traffic to road users and the two uncompleted structures must make way.
The action by the National Security has received mixed reaction from the public but the university was incensed by the action.
The Academic Board of the university quickly convened an emergency meeting and resolved to take legal action against the Larry Gbevlo-Lartey.
A 10-point statement issued by the board condemned in no uncertain terms the action by the national security coordinator.
"The Academic Board has observed that the perpetrators of the above act entered University of Ghana property without permission from the University, contrary to the University of Ghana Act 2010, Act 806.
"The Academic Board considers the actions of the National Security Coordinator and his team arbitrary, unconstitutional and unlawful, and a direct attack on academic freedom and national democracy," the statement said.
The board further described the action as a "major embarrassment to the freedom-loving people of Ghana."
While directing the management of the university to sue the national security coordinator, the board also asked the government to unconditionally "condemn the barbaric act perpetrated by its appointed officials" and also "take steps to replace the two structures demolished by its appointed officials as soon as possible."
