Chiefs in Tamale are livid after "heavily fortified security personnel" denied them entry to the Jubilee Park where several hundreds gathered to celebrate independence day in the Northern regional capital, Tamale.
According to spokesperson for the Chiefs, the security men prevented them because they were late.
Ghana's independence celebrations was marked in all ten regional capitals with a parade of school children from Junior to Senior High schools and security personnel.
The parade was inspected by regional ministers, accompanied by regional security heads - except in Accra where the president carried out the routine.
But Northern regional celebrations was not without incident. The paramount chief of Tamale Gulkpe-naa Alhassan Abdulai was asked to use a different entry point after his delegation pulled up late.
"They said we should use an alternative route which was equal to going around the jubilee park two times," he said.
The Paramount chief was expected to join the regional minister to take the salute from the school children on the parade.
The chief's entourage begged the security personnel to no avail. The armed men recommended the chief to get down from his vehicle and walk to the dais.
"Just as he was about to enter the oval, this same people said we should go and use that other route. Ah? what actually do you want us to do? You said we should not use the vehicle, now the chief has alighted and you are not allowing us to enter", a spokesperson lamented.
The action of the security personnel angered the traditional entourage who boycotted the celebrations.
A spokesperson said the paramountcy will be demanding an apology from the Northern regional minister for the disrespectful attitude of the security personnel.
