The Attorney General's department is making frantic moves to commence the full trial of a police officer, who allegedly shot and killed a 28-year-old man and wounded a police officer in 2008 at the Ho Regional Residency in the Volta region.

Chief state attorney, Anthony Rexford Wiredu, Monday, told the fast track court (FTC), presided over by Justice Mustapha Habib Logoh that witnesses are being gathered from the Volta regional capital and arrangements are made to enable them appear before the court on the next adjourned date.

The chief state attorney, after conferring with defense counsel, Mr. Ayikoi Otoo, decided to have the next hearing date fixed in two weeks.

The court, therefore adjourned hearing to March 24, 2014, when prosecution witnesses are expected to give evidence in the case.

The accused person, General Constable Ebenezer Owusu, who is currently under trial by a-seven-member jury on the charges of manslaughter and murder, pleaded not guilty to all the charges leveled against him.

He is remanded into prison custody.

General Constable Owusu after the alleged incident was arrested in 2011 to face a service enquiry and was granted bail on November 27, 2013.

The chief state attorney, Mr. Wiredu had told the court that General Constable Owusu was stationed at Volta regional capital, Ho.

The accused person, according to the chief state attorney, was on June 2, 2008, detailed together with one General constable John Ofori Ankamah on guard duty at the Regional residency, when Mr. Kofi Dzamesi was then the regional minister.

While on duty at about 9pm, Daniel Dzikunu Agbale (deceased) came to the regional minister's residence, the court heard.

Daniel had come to see the minister at a time, when the accused person had gone to see off his girlfriend, but was not allowed into the residency, the chief state attorney told the court.

The then regional minister had assisted Daniel through driving school in 2007,

Daniel is said to have forced his way into the residency and reported to Superintendent T.T. Nartey, now deceased, who escorted him to see the regional minister.

On hearing the incidence on his return, the accused person, fully armed, followed up to the residency and opened fire on them, killing Daniel instantly and severely injuring the police officer, superintendent T.T. Nartey, who was taken to the Ho General hospital.

Superintendent T.T. Nartey was later airlifted to the 37 Military Hospital, where he died on June 5, 2008.
