The Mayor of Accra Alfred Oko Vanderpuije says he has been receiving threats regarding the removal of Sodom of and Gomorrah.
Sodom and Gomorrah is a slum around the Korle Lagoon and as part of plans to renovate the Lagoon, the AMA has to eject the illegal settlers from the slum.
Several years ago Sodom and Gomorrah, then Old Fadama was a recreational place where people would go to play soccer.
As time went on, Sodom and Gomorrah went from a place of recreation to a place of habitation, and it is now home to an estimated 80,000 people.
Speaking to the Parliamentary select committee on Works and Housing on Wednesday, Vanderpuije said “I received a letter from Europe saying that signatures have been taken, and if I want to continue with the removal of Sodom and Gomorrah I will have to go to the Hague” the Mayor disclosed.
The Mayor also received a letter from the British Parliament, asking about the removal of Sodom and Gomorrah.
“It is important to note that the Assembly has had issues about the occupancy at Sodom and Gomorrah, to the extent that the matter had gone to the court before, and the courts declared the place not fit for human habitation”, said Mayor Vanderpuije.
Conditions of the Slums were deemed to be very poor, which encouraged the decision to completely remove the Habitation.
However, the course of action, to remove the slum, evicting its residents, according to Mayor Vanderpujie has changed.
The Ministry of Works and Housing and the Ministry of Local Government have completed facilities in Adjen Kotoku where the commercial activities of the slums such as the Onion, Yam and Timber markets will be relocated.
According to the Mayor, “when it comes to the residents, that is the issue we are yet to completely put our hands around”.
The AMA under the guidance of PV Obeng is currently trying to develop a definite plan on how to upgrade the slum, making it into a place of residence, fit for its Residents.
