The Greater Accra Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) says prices in transport fares will inevitably be increased following hikes in fuel prices.

Robert Sarbah told Joy News' Jefferson Sackey "passengers will not escape from this increase."

The National Petroleum Authority announced new hikes in fuel prices as part of the automatic adjustment policy being implemented.

Petrol would now be sold at  2 cedis  73 pesewas per  litre representing a 7 percent increase from the old price.

Kerosene has gone up by 0.38 percent and would be selling  at  2 cedi 36 pesewas.

You would  now need 2 Ghana cedis 87 pesewas to get a  kilogram of  LGP.

The new prices undoubtedly would affect operations at the transport industry, especially in respect of transport fares.

Robert Sarbah said the union held on to the old fares despite increases in fuel prices in February and March, adding this time there will be a corresponding increase in transport fares.

"We cannot run the transport business without increasing transport fares when fuel prices are increased," he stated.

He described as "totally false" assertions that there will be no hikes in transport fares until June this year.
