The chairman of the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), Ben Peprah Amoabeng has said that latest by Friday, April 4, this year, transport fares will be increased.
Speaking on Joy News, Tuesday, Mr. Peprah Amoabeng was confident that passengers would have to pay more as transport fares following an upward adjustment in prices of petroleum products announced Tuesday, April 1, 2014.
According to him, the council is awaiting a confirmation from the transport ministry before transport operators begin charging the new fares, which is expected to be calculated in line with the percentage increase of petroleum products announced.
The Chairman of GRTCC was reacting to a notice served by the Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU) in Accra that it will pass on the increments to passengers.
However, the GRTCC is asking the union to be patient, while new prices are computed.
The council is therefore requesting patrons of commercial transport to support what it called an “inevitable increase”.
Prices of petroleum products had gone up by up to seven percent with petrol, currently selling at GHC2.73 per liter representing a-7-percent increase from the old price.
Kerosene has gone up by 0.38 percent and would be selling at GHC2.36 per liter with a kilogramme of LPG going for GHC2.87.
The hike is in line with the mandate of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) to review prices of petroleum products as part of the implementation of the automatic adjustment policy.
Meanwhile, some motorists, both private and commercial drivers, have reacted unfavourably against the fuel price hike.
