The Interior Minister, Kwesi Ahwoi on the advice of the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has imposed a curfew on Nakpanduri and its environs effective Tuesday, April 8, 2014.

The curfew follows communal violence that has claimed lives and properties.

The curfew imposed is from 6pm to 6am.

In addition to the curfew imposition, the Interior Minister placed a total ban on carrying arms, ammunitions and any offensive weapons within the affected communities.

Violent clashes in the adjoining district, East Mamprusi, between Mamprusis, and Konkombas on one hand and Bimobas on the other, led to the death of three people.

But the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bunkpurugu Constituency, Solomon Namliit Boar says the imposition of the curfew is long overdue.

Speaking to Joy News Tuesday, the MP questioned the timing of the curfew . He wondered why a curfew would be announced at a time calm has returned to the area, when it could have been announced during the heat of the conflict.

According to him, citizens in the community are in a state of shock, when the announcement was made as they blamed the authorities for allowing the conflict to worsen before attempting to solve it.

The residents are even more angry with the imposition because they do not understand why Nakpanduri would be slapped with a curfew when the conflict actually took place in the East Mamprusi District.

In explaining why Nakpanduri was rather slapped with the curfew instead of the East Mamprusi District, where the conflict occurred, Joy News' Northern Regional Correspondent, Hashmin Mohammed reported that Nankpanduru is the traditional capital of the Bimobas and that is where the Bimobas mobilize to attack neighbouring communities made up of Mamprusis and Konkombas, when communal conflict erupts.

Furthermore, lots of residents have fled the conflict area, where about 101 houses had been burnt down and over a thousand people rendered homeless.

In the interim, the district National Disaster Mobilization Organization (NADMO) is currently registering victims of the conflict to arrange some relief items for them.
