President John Dramani Mahama says government will not relent on its efforts at investing in key sectors of the economy to create jobs for the people.

According to him, investing in local skills training coupled with government determination to revamp Ghanaian indigenous industry are crucial to resolving the unemployment situation in the country.

President Mahama was speaking at the start of a three-day working visit in the Ashanti Region where he visited the Defence Industries Holding Company (DIHOC) shoe factory in Kumasi.

The tour is to afford the President the opportunity to inspect ongoing projects and also assess progress of work on various development projects initiated by the government.

Expressing joy at the state of work at the factory, President Mahama recounted how the factory was revamped after collaboration with the Czech Republic.

Work however began in 2012.The factory, he said has transformed significantly and is now producing boots for the security services.

“I must say am impressed. We are now able to produce our boots for our security services. The Armed Forces of Ghana are having all their boots manufactured here. And today when I came Immigration Service have also placed an order for their boots and am sure that the Police Service, the Fire service, the Prisons service, Customs Excise Service and all will soon start purchasing their boots from here so that we don’t have to import the boots from outside," he stressed.

Reiterating the need for Ghanaians to purchase and use made in Ghana goods, President Mahama indicated that when Ghanaians produce goods and consume them locally, it will empower indigenous companies as well as create jobs especially for youth in the country.

President Mahama also urged the ministries of Trade and Industry, Education and Local government to“put a program together so that we can make shoes, sandals and footwear to accompany the school uniforms for the school children’’

He charged Ghanaians to be confident in the government, adding that Ghana is blessed and will make more progress to surmount what he described as temporary challenges with the economy.

The Defence Industries Holding Company (DIHOC)  have trained 200 people in shoe production and  50 are currently working with the expectation to expand the activities of the factory in order to engage more of the youth.
