An important road that links the Greater Accra region to parts of the Eastern Region has become unmotorable, dotted with deep gullies and craters caused by the incessant downpour.
Residents of Amanfrom-Toptown and it’s environs are wailing over the poor condition of their roads as drivers dread the unavoidable situation of plying their trade on the road.
Some residents of the community are also said to be moving out of the neighbourhood since the situation is becoming unbearable. They blame government for failing to live up to its electoral promise to construct the road.
Speaking to Myjoyonline.com's Samuel E. Bruce, one of the drivers complained,, “when it rains I can’t move my car because a journey that has to take three or five minutes takes twenty minutes and as such we burn fuel. The road hinders our business a lot and as such due to the situation I have not been able to use my car.”
However, MCE of the Ga-South municipality, Jerry Akwei Thompson, urged residents to exercise calm since the situation is a general one within the municipality and as such a long –term solution is being forged to cater for the solution.”
He admitted the poor state of roads, saying “the hard soil have been taken off, and left with the soft surface so anytime it rains the situation worsens", he further explained.
He revealed that “a contract has been signed to construct a culvert. When that culvert has been completed then we can instruct the roads department to now work on the road .”
The rain have started in earnest and is expected to last till August.
