Three Clearing Agents have been arrested at the Aviance Cargo Village at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) for attempting to smuggle cocaine into the country.
They were rounded up Tuesday at about 11:30 am by officials of the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB).
Sources at the airport said the agents were purportedly facilitating the smooth passage of the suspected illicit drug through the cargo village into the country,
A fourth person was also arrested but it later turned out that he was not part of the deal. As at press time yesterday it was not clear whether he had been released or was still being held by the security agencies.
Their arrest followed a tip-off to the security agencies, who arrived at the facility in two Toyota Camry vehicles.
Attempts to get official confirmation were however not successful.
The latest case of narcotics drug being allegedly facilitated through KIA comes on the heels of a strange and bizarre circumstance under which some 12.5kg of cocaine with a street value of $5 million was taken through the VVIP section of the Kotoka International Airport into a waiting airplane and flown abroad by one Nayele Ametefeh aka Ruby Adu Gyamfi and her purported two lady accomplices. Ruby was later busted at the Heathrow Airport in London, United Kingdom.
She pleaded guilty to the charge of transporting drug suspected to be cocaine when she appeared before the Isleworth Crown Court in London on November 27, 2014.
The case has since been adjourned to Monday, Jan 5, 2015 for sentencing, by which time the court would be furnished with laboratory analysis of the quantity and purity of the substance, plus its street value, before the verdict is pronounced.
