An unbearable stench from a 20-seater public toilet has left residents of Akumanjay in Jamestown predisposed to a potential health hazard.
The privately run public toilet takes weeks before it gets cleaned. Residents have to hold their noses and frown at the sight of heaps of faeces.
“It is very bad. The people in the area have no choice”, Festus Hayford told Joy News' Anny Osabutey.
Akumanjay is a one of the communities in a densely populated Jamestown. Many houses are not equipped with sanitary facilities despite a directive by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to provide toilets at every home.
The population is putting stress on the maintenance of the 20-seater toilet facility. Although monies are collected from users, the state of the structure betrays the use of these monies.
Despite the poor maintenance and foul smell, it has not stopped a woman from selling fried turkey, 100 meters away from the sad spectacle.
"We are eating sickness and it’s not right”, another resident complained about the siting of food close to the toilet.
With nearly 30,000 cholera infections and 150 deaths nationwide, his fears are not unjustifiable.
