A two-day workshop has been organized by the Ketu South Municipal Health Directorate to ascertain its performance of 2014 program of work by various departments.
The theme “Achieving Excellence and Improved Service Delivery Linkage between Public Health and Clinical care”, highlighted some achievements in the health sector in the municipality.
The Municipal health director, Joseph Kwame Degley noted that the funds were already inadequate to carry out their agenda for the year to the fullest and the only source of funding that was available for projects and activities were from reimbursement from the NHIS which was also irregular and insufficient.
According to him, as at the end of December, the last payment made was for June 2014 and in the midst of the financial difficulty, an outbreak of cholera in the municipality affected as many as 595 people with 3 deaths. and another challenge with the Ebola.
He noted that another challenge was with the Ebola virus situation currently plaguing the sub-region. He said with the introduction of the use of non-contact thermometers at the borders during the outbreak of the disease in some West African countries, the service has been able to screen 120,856 travellers for suspected Ebola virus and about 1,984 travellers were provided with international vaccination cards.
Mr Degley noted that the current situation where the port health is not at the forefront in order to screen arriving travellers, calls for serious concern since the EVD can sneak into the country through the main Aflao and other unapproved borders in the region.
He called on the health ministry and stakeholders to do something urgent about the situation, especially making sure that all the unapproved borders in Aflao and the region are protected against the virus.
He also called for collaboration between residents and the health officials to deal with filth in the municipality.
