National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) boss Kofi Portuphy today responded to calls for assistance by devastated communities in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region.
Mr Portuphy handed over 300 stacks of roofing sheets to Volta Regional Minister Helen Ntosu, for distribution to the affected communities as well as 12 other districts affected by heavy rains in the past year.
In presenting the items, Kofi Portuphy cautioned residents to be wary of the heavy rains, which have seemingly gathered strength this year. He pointed out that the “recovery process was difficult to manage because of the challenge of funds” and urged residents to be wary of the rains which seem to be gaining strength this year.
He said heavy rains and flash flooding affected more than ten thousand people in the past year and that 77% of those affected are women and children; the most vulnerable in society.
Helen Ntosu on her part commended NADMO for the swift response and said the schools will be first to receive assistance, in order to enable the pupils return to their lessons as soon as possible.
Heavy rains, a fortnight ago, struck some communities in the South Tongu District, dealing massive damage to buildings in the area.
Several people were displaced as buildings, two of them schoolrooms were subjected to various degrees of damage in Agbagorme and Agbakope.
