Veteran Ghanaian actress Grace Nortey has cautioned the current crop of actresses to be very modest in their dressing, insisting that provocative dresses showing the breasts is demeaning.
The actress, who turned 78 on Sunday, February 1, advised young actresses to respect themselves and dress because that is how they can earn the respect of others.
Indecent dressing by some Ghanaian actresses has for some time now become major talking points in the country’s movie industry.
Ghanaian actress Nikki Samonas is particularly noted for exposing her boobs in public without qualms. She is quoted to have said she likes to flaunt her boobs since they are small and “it’s easier to do that when they are small than when they are heavy.”
The Deputy Minister for Culture, Tourism and Creative Arts, Dzifa Abla Gomashie took a swipe at the actress for revealing that she exposes her boobs to be in the news.
Grace Nortey commenting on the unfortunate trend in an interview on Airtel Entertainment News on Drive Time on Joy FM Tuesday urged actresses to respect themselves and value their bodies.
“They should respect themselves and humble themselves. Exposing your breast and all that is not the important thing in this world.” She stressed that it is so shameful to see some actresses dress indecently and expose their body.
The veteran actress also advised “those who are married that anytime you get a script, discuss it with your husband. The roles you are going to play let your husband know. Tell your husband the whole show.”
She believes that the key to achieving greatness in their chosen career of acting is to “respect your directors and your producers. Humility, you have to humble yourself. Humility counts.”
Asked what has been up to, Grace Nortey, who has gone under the radar for a while now, said old age and ill-health have caught up with her and they have slowed her down.
“We are getting old and getting tired. If you don’t get the roles what do you do? For the past few months I wasn’t feeling fine. I have been in and out of hospital.”
Some veteran Ghanaian actors and actress – including Edinam Atatsi, Rama Brew, George Williams, Emmanuel Armah and Grace Omaboe - threw a surprise birthday party for her on Sunday, February 1.
Grace Nortey said she was touched by the surprise birthday party and thanked her colleagues, “God, my children and my grandchildren,” for the surprise.
