A mentorship programme to expose children to engineering and its opportunities saw a lot of pupils and students participate in the World Engineering Day event in Kumasi.
The catch-them-young initiative is a collaboration between the Ghana Institute of Engineering and the Building and Road Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.
Children of the BRRI Basic School toured the institute’s laboratories to have insight into engineering career paths.
One-on-one interaction with members of the institute as well as drone and concrete technologies received attention.
Consulting Geodetic Engineer, Naa Lamkai Quaye-Ballard, reveals sensitizing school children on Sustainable Development Goals is crucial.
“Most of them have not been exposed to engineering practice so they have little knowledge of how engineering can impact their lives and help in the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Ghana Institute of Engineering in collaboration with the Building and Road Institute is trying to target the children by inviting them every year and take them go round our facilities so they see how industry and engineering works in the attainment of the SDGs,” she explains, in optimism.
Meanwhile, at a short ceremony to mark the occasion, BRRI is urging application of engineering technologies to fast-track achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.
Director, Asenso Gyembibi, believes Ghana’s ability to leverage modern technology will make life comfortable for the citizenry.

“There is not a single one of the SDGs, engineering cannot achieve including gender. We are talking about robotics, big data and alI. These are tools been used to drive economies. Now when we talk about civil engineering, we’re talking about modeling,” he noted.
“We need to embrace them to make life comfortable,” Gyembibi added.
Engineering technology involves the practical application of science and engineering to a range of real-world problems.
Mr. Gyembibi says Ghana has more to gain from emerging disciplines of engineering.
World Engineering Day is under the theme, Engineering for Sustainable Development was organized by the Ghana Institute of Engineers.
Scientists converged to highlight the role engineering plays in the lives of people.
