The Ghana Ports and Habours Authority has revealed that a crewmember with a suspected case of COVID-19 aboard one of the vessels at the Tema port has tested negative.
In a statement signed by its General Manager in charge of Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Esther Gyebi-Donkor, a crew member of a ship which arrived on March 13, 2020, exhibited symptoms of the virus such as fever, cough, sore throat, periodic sweating among others.
According to the authority, the vessel was quarantined as blood samples of the individual were taken to the Noguchi Memorial Institute of Medical research which returned negative.
"At about 10:00 pm, the results of the analysis were released by Noguchi and the sick crew member was declared negative of COVID-19," the statement read.
The GPHA, however, attributed the success of the operation to the effectiveness of their response efforts targeted at combatting the threat of the novel coronavirus at the ports.
"GPHA wished to note that this incident was successfully reported and managed due to the practical coronavirus preparedness Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) put in place by the port," the statement added.
