The Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed worry over what he believes is a wide discrepancy between the commitment of the president to reducing the impact of the novel coronavirus on Ghanaians and the feasibility of these pronouncements.
While commending the government for the various impact mitigation interventions, Peter Boamah Otokunor, in an open letter to President Akufo-Addo states that, these intentions may be inadequate and must be reconsidered.
The President on Sunday night addressed the country on steps being taken by his administration to alleviate the plight of Ghanaians even as the lockdown ensues in an attempt to contain the spread of the virus.
But Mr. Otokunor in the April 7, 2020, letter explained that some interventions such as the provision of food, affordable supply of electricity and water bill absorption, must be tailored adequately to address the needs of citizens in this time of Covid-19 crisis.
He also quizzed that, "Don’t you think a socially responsive government should also consider reducing fuel prices drastically, especially as global prices of fuel plummets to as low as about US$ 26.41per barrel?"
