Some Police Commanders in the Greater Accra Region have revealed that persons who commit minor offenses will not be detained due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking to Joy News’ Maxwell Agbagba during a Zoomlion Covid-19 disinfection exercise, the officers said the decision will decongest police cells and prevent the spread of the virus.
“We ensure that minor offenders are not detained but promptly granted bail to prevent overcrowding in facility,” the Commander of the Korle-Bu Police Station, DSP Cephas Edzeani said.
He indicated that in order to protect inmates from contracting the virus visitors are not allowed to contact convicts adding that officers who interact with them observe the protocols when administering their duties.
“We do not allow people to contact the inmates and we make sure that visitors observe the protocols like handwashing, social distancing and wearing of nose masks at all times.”
Addressing the Covid-19 cases recorded in the Dansoman Divisional Command, Superintendent Daniel Jeffery Darko said contact tracing have been carried out and samples of identified persons have been taken to Noguchi Memorial Institute of Medical Research.
He noted his officers are ensuring that all the precautionary measures stated by the Ghana Health Service is being adhered to.
“Citizens still come here to lodge complaints, and we are still going to court but we ensure that all times we abide by all the safety protocols.”
“But we do not detain people in all cases, some of them we take witness statement and if there is enough evidence, we go to court immediately. If there is no evidence, we grant bail for people to go home.”
On his part, the Mamprobi Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Cephas Arthur expressed his gratitude to the waste management company, Zoomlion Limited for carrying out the exercise to disinfect various police stations in the country.
“This will definitely go a long way to sanitise our offices and protect us against the virus so if our equipment or any of our logistics were contaminated they are now safe to use,” he said.
