The Deputy General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has advised that reviewing safety protocols will be necessary considering the alarming spike in positive Covid-19 cases.
Dr Titus Beyuo who is a member of the Infectious Diseases Committee of the Association lamented the poor observance of safety protocols which has caused an increase in infections.
“Well, imposing new restrictions, I would say yes. Lockdown might be difficult but I think any other restriction should be guided by the figures we are getting. The data is showing us we are going in a worse direction,” he stated.
According to him, the existing messages of wearing masks and practising social distancing are being ignored by a large section of the public leading to the spikes in cases.
As a result, he said there is a need for more pressing measures to capture the situation by implementing strict protocols.
“We need something that creates social awareness that things are not looking that good,” he said on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Wednesday.
The medical doctor stated that the need for political activities and the running of the nation’s economy may have triggered the easing of existing restrictions.
However, he advised that there should be insistence for benchmarks from government to trigger responsible behaviour from the public.
Dr Beyuo adding that government communications must have clear timelines.
“We can say if people do not obey instructions at a particular polling centre the place should be closed down so that the people there know we are serious about observing social distancing? Somebody must be held responsible,” he appealed.
So far, Ghana has recorded a total of 18,134 positive Coronavirus cases, 13,550 recoveries and 117 deaths.
