The Medical Superintendent Ghana has called on government to redefine who qualifies as frontline staff in order to motivate health workers in the country.

At a press briefing, the Group’s President, Dr Joseph Tambil insisted that the health workers who do not fall within the category as stipulated by government are those more exposed to contracting Covid-19.

“We know that the people who have been infected [so far] are those at the OPDs, the records, at the accident emergency wards, the laboratories and at the wards and many more.

“[This is because] these are places where you don’t know who has what, but you have to attend to every patient and we think that is where the risk is highest,” he stated.

On Friday, July 3, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) revealed that 150 medical doctors have so far tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Although they have recorded some recoveries, three medical top specialists have succumbed to the disease.

Also, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwifery Association (GRNMA) in June said over 200 of its members have contracted the virus and one has died as a result.

For Dr Tambil, an expedited decision on redefining frontline workers is critical at this point.

He also urged government to rescue public hospitals which are on the verge of collapse due to debt.

He suggested that “government can rescue hospitals public hospitals by setting up a relief fund similar to what has been done for businesses.

"We believe that if there is any institution that needs rescuing it is our public hospitals," he added.
