The governing New Patriotic Party has congratulated Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyemang on her appointment as the NDC’s vice presidential candidate for the 2020 general elections.
At a press conference at the NPP’s headquarters in Accra Monday, the NPP noted that “it is better late than never,” referring to what they describe as the delayed announcement of a running mate from the NDC.
Speaking to the media, Communications Director of the NPP, Yaw Buaben Asamoa undermined Prof. Opoku-Agyemang as an opponent.
Recounting the veteran educationist’s days as Minister for Education, he said it was under her tenure that teacher trainee allowances were scrapped, which he indicated is not a selling point for the running mate.
The Adentan MP also impugned the former Minister’s standing as a women’s rights advocate.
“Opoku-Agyeman hardly meets the expectations of someone who has the track record of fighting for women r their welfare,” he told journalists.
According to Buaben Asamoa, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang was among the Ministers and NDC activists who signed a petition for the pardon of some NDC communicators who had threatened to assault Supreme Court judges and the Chief Justice who was a woman on live radio.
He said these are the issues the NPP will be raising in the lead up to the elections and Prof. Opoku-Agyemang should "get ready for the fire ahead."
However, the NDC is convinced the former Vice Chancellor of University of Cape Coast is the one for the job.
Speaking to Joy FM after the announcement, Former Deputy Education Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa who worked under the professor said she is very competent for the job.
The North Tongu MP described his former boss as a results driven fellow who tolerates no laziness.
He said her choice as running mate will energise the party to victory in December 2020 with her appeal to women groups playing a key role.
