Civil society organisation, The Ark Foundation has joined the widespread condemnation of a broad day murder of a 90-year-old woman in Kafaba, Savannah Region.
A statement from the Foundation demanded swift investigations and arrest of the “perpetrators of the brutal act and the bystanders; and bring them before the law courts.”
“We call upon the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to work hard to educate the public against such human rights violations; especially those that emanate from deep-seated negative cultural norms and practices,” the statement said.
It added that these many of these practices undermine the protection of women’s human rights in the country.
“Violence against women, no matter who perpetrated it, is still a human right violation and must be treated as such,” the statement added.
The Foundation is also calling on the “Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Interior, and relevant institutions to work together to ensure that justice is done and done swiftly.”
Akua Denteh was lynched after a said priestess accused her of witchcraft, an accusation commonly thrown at elderly women in rural communities.
In a video sighted by JoyNews, the deceased was slapped, kicked and caned on Thursday at Kafaba near Salaga in the East Gonja Municipality.
Police in the Savannah Region are investigating the murder.
