The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) says his next administration will establish a Gold Board.
Former President John Mahama said the Board will be responsible for regulating gold mine activities in the country.
He also said it will ensure job creation for the youth, especially those from the University of Mines and Technology.
"If you take a look at the Gold mining sector, it can employ more than a million young people. So we have a lot of policies regarding Gold mining so that we can do the small scale mining for Ghanaians to benefit from it," he said.
He was speaking at the NDC's townhall meeting in the Ashanti Region where he noted that the Gold Board will operate as the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) does.
"Just as we have Cocobod which takes care of the cocoa sector, we will also establish a Gold Development Board which will also manage gold mining activities in the country in such a way that, they can give support to the small scale miners," he said.
He further noted that the board will equip miners with knowledge on safe mining and how to conduct their mining activities in a way that will not endanger the environment.
"The board will train the youth in such a way that, after work, they will level the mining grounds, plant more trees in a bid to protect the environment," he said.
