The Presidential candidate of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Reverend Christian Kwabena Andrews, says the political party will emerge victorious in the upcoming December 2020 General Elections with a 65 per cent margin.
The flagbearer, popularly referred to as Osofo Kyiri Abosom, premised his comments on the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong’s recent remarks on the genuineness of the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) victory in the 2016 elections.
“Kennedy Agyapong said they know how they won the elections, and if the NPP didn’t treat him right, then he will come out to tell everybody. For someone at the forefronts of the Political party to say this, it indicates that there is something fishy somewhere,” he said.
The GUM flagbearer made this comment in an interview with Joy News shortly after his presentation of all relevant documents to formalize his candidature for the Presidential race at the EC headquarters on Tuesday, October 6, 2020.
Addressing critics and the Coalition of Domestic Elections Observers’ (CODEO) report, which stated that the NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) are the only two parties who seem to be campaigning, he explained that unlike the 2, GUM focuses its campaign movements in rural areas, where according to him, the party sources most of its supporters.
“We have our supporters in the villages, but the elites think people with degrees – lawyers and others – are supposed to come into the political scene, and that is what they [NPP and NDC] are doing.
One day, we will prove to them that they are going to fall, and we shall rise,” he said.
Reverend Andrews lauded the Electoral Commission (EC) on maintaining order during the voter's registration exercise, adding that the credibility of the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections depends on the Commission.
He also urged the EC’s Chairperson, Jean Mensa, to uphold neutrality going into the election.
