Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has called on the state to beef up security for MPs in the country, especially during campaign seasons.
Following the death of the Mfantseman MP, the Suame legislator said it has become necessary for MPs to be assigned with security officers, just as Ministers are assigned.
"I know ultimately, our protection is in the hands of the Lord, however, sometimes the mere presence of the policeman will ward off such intruders," he told Winston Amoah on the Super Morning Show.
Ekow Quansah Hayford was shot dead Friday dawn while returning from a campaign trip.
Eyewitnesses say, while the robbery was ongoing, the MP identified himself. This allegedly infuriated the robbers who blamed him for the problems being faced by people in the country.
He was then shot twice, leading to his untimely demise.
The Majority Leader who doubles as the Minister for Parliamentary affairs believes that if the MP had a police escort, his chances of escaping the attack could have been high.
"What has happened is most unfortunate. We have Ministers in the system, we offer them protection. Why can't we do same for the Members of Parliament?" he asked.
