The opposition National Democratic Congress has accused the NPP administration of empowering party vigilantes in the country.
According to the Presidential candidate of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama, government has neglected its responsibility of resourcing the Police Service, and is rather using state funds to resource vigilante groups.
“Now instead of equipping the police with weapons, bulletproof vests and the things they need to fight the armed robbers, they are using those weapons and bulletproof vests and vehicles to give to their vigilantes to terrorize Ghanaians,” Mr. Mahama said.
He made this comment during a rally at Yendi where he also noted that this has resulted in the increase of robbery attacks in the country.
The former President added that unlike his days in office, Ghanaians feel very insecure under the NPP government.
He, therefore, urged voters in the Northern Region to give him the nod in the upcoming elections in order to enable him effectively deal with the security challenges in the country.
“Today you can’t travel freely in this part of the country without the fear of falling into the hands of armed robbers,” he said.
“It is when NDC is in power that we feel safe and secure. Anytime the NDC leaves power, we have an upsurge in an armed robbery,” Mr Mahama added.
On his part, Minority Leader and MP for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu also alleged that the ruling government is planning to recruit unprofessional officers into the Police Service to terrorise electorates in the upcoming elections.
“Nana Akufo-Addo and the Inspector General Police are planning to commission 1,800 police officers tomorrow who have not been properly trained and who have been trained below the minimum requirement of six months intensive training,” he said.
For that matter, he asked Ghanaians to vote in favour of the NDC in the upcoming polls.
