The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it is in a position to maintain its majority status in Parliament after the Electoral Commission officially declares the results of Monday’s election.

This comes as a response to the opposition National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) claims to have flipped some 36 parliamentary seats nationwide.

Speaking at a press briefing at 3:00 am Tuesday, NPP General Secretary, John Boadu, dismissed the claims, describing them as misleading since provisional results indicate otherwise.

“The NDC needs to take Ghanaians seriously, and check their facts before addressing the nation; this is a serious matter about election results. Creating insinuations causes a lack of credibility in our whole election process.

"The NPP’s 2016 win of a majority of 169 seats in Parliament was historic and the first of its kind since the 4^th Republic dispensation. We’re happy to announce that for the next Parliament, it is obvious from the results declared across the constituencies that the NPP will still maintain a majority in Parliament,” he said.

The Director of Elections for the main opposition, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, had stated in the NDC's press address a few hours earlier that the party had won several seats currently occupied by NPP representatives.

These seats according to Mr. Ankrah included Ledzekuku, Madina, Krowor, and Jomoro, in addition to some 32 others.

But Mr. Boadu strongly maintains that the NPP has equally flipped seats in several constituencies currently occupied by Members of Parliament for the NDC.

Paramount amongst these, he claims, is the Hohoe Constituency where Energy Minister, John Peter Amewu is reported to have secured the seat from the incumbent, NDC's Bernice Adiku Heloo.
