Chairman of the National Peace Council, Dr Ernest Adu-Gyamfi has warned that criminals may infiltrate into the ongoing protest by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) causing mayhem to citizens.
According to him, the party would be held responsible should these miscreants wreak havoc during amid their series of demonstrations.
This, he said, would dent the hard earned reputation built by the party.
Dr Adu-Gyamfi, however, urged the opposition party to seek redress in court in solving any electoral issues.
"You may find criminals that may infiltrate into their rants and the fact is that whatever happens between now and then, people will blame them and it is going to damage their future reputation as a party and that is why we are appealing to their members and their supporters to tone down and find the appropriate means to address these issues,” he said.
Agitation against the declaration of Nana Akufo-Addo as President-elect in the just-ended polls continues to intensify as NDC supporters in various regions have been protesting since December 9.
The NDC's presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama has since described the Electoral Commission's (EC) results as fictionalised to favour the incumbent government.
Meanwhile, Dr Adu-Gyamfi stated that constant threats from political parties possess a danger to the country's democracy, hence, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) must avoid counter-demonstration for peace to reign.
He revealed that the Council has counselled the ruling NPP to detach themselves from a counter-demonstration.
He said, “We have been engaging and encouraging them [NPP] not to do counter-demonstrations because those are the things that spark the conflicts and so you will notice that by and large, the NPP have restrained themselves in terms of going out.
The Chairperson also urged the two major political parties to find appropriate means to deal with election-related issues.
