Member of Parliament for Akatsi North, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, has said that he will lead the Volta MPs caucus to correct the despicable act by Badu Nkansah, publishers of the Ewe textbooks.
According to a statement issued by the MP, the books contain very distasteful paragraphs against the Ewes.
“The more you flip the pages the more enraged you become as an Ewe at the attempt to re-write our history and paint a gloomy picture about us to the next generation.”
A reason, he will engage Volta MPs to champion the cause to correct the offensive act against Ewes by the publication.
“I will equally lead the Volta MPs Caucus to make an official statement on the issue on the floor of Parliament to demand that the relevant bodies in charge of our educational sector do the needful to correct this offensive, divisive and despicable act,” a part of the statement indicated.
Also, Mr Nortsu –Kotoe has commended voices who have publicly spoken against these publications because their voices are relevant to a large extent on the matter.
He added that, the book was not written to promote national cohesion but an attempt to re-write the Ghanaian history and paint out a gloomy picture about Ghana to the next generation.
“I wish to put on record that these publications are not in resonation with our quest for national cohesion as a country. Education is supposed to inform and disabuse people's mind against ethnic stereotyping, bigotry and other unhealthy impressions.”
Badu Nkansah publisher of the ‘History of Ghana’ textbook which has generated an uproar amongst Ghanaians has rendered an unqualified apology for its ‘offensive description’ of Ewes in the publication.
Meanwhile, the North Tongu MP has filed an urgent request in Parliament for the Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum to answer to newly-authored history textbooks titled ‘History of Ghana’.
STATEMENT ON CONTROVERSIAL TEXT BOOKS
I have followed keenly the debate and rightly so, the outrage of my people, the Ewe Community across the country regarding these ethnocentric publications titled: History of Ghana, authored by Badu Nkansah and Nelly Martinson Anim and Golden English 4, authored by Alexander Baafi for the purposes of teaching and learning in our schools.
Not only do the books contain very distasteful sentences/paragraphs but it begs to say that the more you flip the pages the more enraged you become as an Ewe at the attempt to re-write our history and paint a gloomy picture about us to the next generation.
I have heard voices that matter speak publicly against these publications and wish to commend them before I add my voice.
I wish to put on record that these publications are not in resonation with our quest for national cohesion as a country. Education is supposed to inform and disabuse people's mind against ethnic stereotyping, bigotry and other unhealthy impressions.
Unfortunately, these books are rather out there to do the reverse, thereby sowing a seed of discord amongst us. To correct the wrongs, it is only appropriate that the books be recalled and taken out of the market completely.
I will equally lead the Volta MPs Caucus to make an official statement on the issue on the floor of Parliament to demand that the relevant bodies in charge of our educational sector do the needful to correct this offensive, divisive and despicable act.
