Director in Charge of Planning and Programmes at the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), David Osafo Adonteng says his outfit is determined to ensure that all commercial transport service providers undergo mandatory training in 'defensive driving'.
According to him, this exercise will equip drivers with skills that allow them to defend themselves and passengers against possible collisions caused by bad drivers, drunk drivers, and poor weather while reducing the increasing number of road accidents in the country.
“We have issued a directive that all commercial transport service providers must take their drivers through defensive driving and it is mandatory. We will use our authority mandate to ensure that they do," he said to Evans Mensah on PM Express.
Majority of the road accidents Mr Adonteng said, is as a result of unregulated motorcyclists.
He, therefore, disclosed that apart from the training exercise, the NRSA, Police, and other stakeholders are working together to come up with policies that will reduce the menace.
“In the coming months, we are also looking at how we, police and other stakeholders together with Parliament would have to put something in place to regulate motorcycle usage in Ghana.
"...many of the crushes come from the motorcycles and indeed if you look at the statistics as we were talking about, currently, the 77 deaths that we have recorded in three months almost 45%-46% or 48% comes from the motorcycle and tricycle"
Mr. Adonteng made this statement after JoyNews premiered a hotline documentary themed, ‘CRUSHED’. 'Crushed' is part of JoyNews' contribution to addressing the country's increasing road accidents.
Produced by Seth Kwame Boateng, CRUSHED captures chilling details of how many families have lost loved ones to road carnage.
Two of such are the heartbreaking story of 29-years-old Mark Ofosu-Ampadu Jnr., who died in a car crash, and 39-year-old Kwame Ofori who has been left amputated.Â
So far a total of about 771 Ghanaians have lost their lives to this menace between January and March this year.
