Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) is set to hold a workshop to examine the dynamics playing out in Ghana’s split parliament and its implication for strengthening inclusion and representation in a multi-party democracy.
The event themed "Challenges and Opportunities of a Split Parliament in Strengthening Inclusion and Representation in a Multiparty Democracy” is scheduled for 23rd April 2021 at the Mensvic Grand Hotel at East Legon in Accra.
Panelists who would be gracing the occasion include the General Secretary of New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr John Badu, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia and Executive Director African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs, Rasheed Draman said the Media, Communications and Coordination Lead, Mr Patrick Okine in a release sighted by JoyNews.
The specific objectives of the forum are to:
- Ascertain factors influencing the voting decision of parliamentarians in decision making process.
- Determine the expectation of parties of their MPs and how these expectations are met.
- Explore the potential challenges and opportunities foe citizens’ representation and inclusion in a multiparty democracy under the current split parliament.
- Discover how MPs balance the interest of their parties and constituents if the two diverge.
- Establish the extent to which the party control over individual MPs undermine multiparty democracy in the country.
- Ascertain the mechanisms that exist for regular MP/ Party engagements.
- Determine the prospect for consensus building between the two sides of the house under split parliament.
According IDEG, due to Covid-19 restrictions, the workshop is strictly by invite.
