The Editor-In-Chief of the New Crusading Guide Newspaper, Kweku Baako Junior has indicated that the country has not sufficiently dealt with the culture of impunity by state security forces displayed towards journalists.
Speaking to Samson Lardy Anyenini on Newsfile Saturday, Mr Baako explained that the ability of military personnel to go scot-free after assault on journalists has encouraged that culture of impunity.
“So I agree with the point that we have not made any improvement relative to curing that impunity. It is clearly incumbent that state institutions, especially focused civil society groups take up this issue and deal with it," he said.”
His comments come on the back of the recent alleged brutality on Citi FM journalist, Kaleb Kudah and the forceful intrusion into the Adabraka-based Citi FM by National Security operatives to pick up Zoe Abu-Baidoo for allegedly receiving unauthorized video taken at the premises of the National Security Ministry.
According to Mr Baako, the method employed by the National Security operatives to arrest Zoe Abu-Baidoo for interrogation was uncalled for.
“The way and manner the National Security invaded City FM premises is unacceptable. It ought not to have happened in this era of technology and media-state institutions relationships,” he stated.
Considering that the security operatives were already in conversation with the Management of Citi FM, Mr Baako noted that the operatives could have been more professional in handling the matter.
On her part, Dean of Information and Communication Studies at the University of Ghana, Legon, Prof. Audrey Gadzekpo reiterated that there is an obvious crises of impunity that must be addressed by the government and national security itself with all urgency.
She entreated government to be concerned about the terrible culture of lawlessness and brutality displayed by operatives of the National Security Ministry.
“We are talking about the mistreatment of journalists and that is bad, but I think we must be concerned about the treatment of other people that come in the purview of national security,” she said.
Prof. Gadzekpo added that the Minister for National Security is a former lawmaker who was well respected during his tenure in Parliament and should be held accountable for the actions in his Ministry.
