A former Vice-Chairman of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee says it is premature that people are calling for the head of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), James Oppong-Boanuh.

Collins Owusu Amankwah explained that "from where I sit I think he’s doing his best to enhance public safety. He needs our support, let the system also support him, he is an individual.”

His comment comes on the back of calls for the police chief to retire over the alarming rate of crime in the country.

In the recent case incident, two persons were killed during an attack on a bullion van by a group of armed robbers at Adedenkpo, near James Town on Monday.

In Kumasi, the wife of the driver of the Ghana National Procurement Corporation (GNPC) was also killed by unknown assailants on Sunday.

Speaking on JoyNews' AM Show Wednesday, Collins Owusu Amankwah, said the IGP is not resting on matter and needs encouragement to do more.

He noted that the Ghana National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons could be charged to join the crusade for the needed expectation.

“The Executive Director there must be up and doing, they need to sensitise the public in terms of possession of illicit firearms," he said. 

A security analyst, Adam Bonaa, in an interview on JoyNews, said, "The IGP has “reached retirement, and government has given him two extensions...so he should go home for more enthusiastic, energised officers who are within the 60 years limit to take over...And probably put a bit more enthusiasm into the Ghana Police.”

But a retired Police Officer and Wa West MP, Peter Lanchene Toobu, who was on the same show also noted that since the President gave the IGP an extension, the decision should be left with the President.

According to him, the calls cannot bar Mr Oppong-Boanuh, however, “If the president decides this morning that Mr IGP thank you very much for the few months that we’ve spent together, I want to get some fresh blood to come and re-energise the system, the IGP will be very appreciative.”

“That position is supposed to work and enhance the President’s credibility in the area of security, so if President Akufo-Addo looks at the security situation in the country and believes that the briefing from the IGP, the observation that he’s made himself and other information gathered from other security agencies points to the fact that there’s some level of collaboration and IGP is doing so well, he will allow him to continue, he appointed him,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Mr Oppong-Boanuh on Tuesday during a visit to the deceased families pleaded with citizens to be modest in their expectations from the police, assuring the police will ensure culprits are brought to book after investigation.
