The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Samuel Nartey George has demanded the immediate release of the #FixTheCountry protesters arrested by the police.

According to him, 10 to 15 people gathering outside the courtroom, socially distanced while holding placards, does not amount to unlawful assembly.

“I'm sure that the police will most likely tell you that it was an unlawful assembly or an assembly in defiance of a Public Order Act. I mean 10 to 15 persons holding placards demanding that the country be fixed, is that where the police would want to show their might?”

“What is it if you have 10 to 15 people holding placards obstructing traffic, not being a nuisance to the public, not disturbing the public peace, but simply asking for the country to be fixed, I struggle to see the rationale behind it,” he told JoyNews’ Joseph Opoku Gakpo.

Mr George stated that the Police must grant the protestors bail, adding that they cannot hold them in the cells.

More than ten protestors, including actress Efia Odo, were arrested for gathering outside the courtroom with #FixTheCountry placards.

This was shortly after a court hearing the case on whether or not the group should be allowed to stage a street protest adjourned proceedings.

After hearing legal arguments on Friday morning, the High Court adjourned proceedings to deliver a ruling at 1:30 pm.

During the period when the legal arguments were going on, some of the campaigners pitched camp in front of the law court complex holding placards .

Shortly after proceedings, they were joined by their colleagues who were in the court room.

While taking photographs, police officers from the Accra Region Command arrived and arrested more than 10 of them.

The Ningo Prampram MP stated that he feels there are two regimes of law being implemented in the country.

“You would have expected the Police Service to go about shutting down the funeral of Sir John, or the crowds that we are seeing accompanying His Excellency, the President as he is campaigning, those are unlawful assemblies. I mean the crowds that have been lined up intentionally to await the arrival of the President, is an unlawful assembly,” he added.

Mr George URGED the Police to be circumspect while carrying out their duties, adding that they also benefit if the country is fixed.
