Former Auditor General, Daniel Domelevo is proposing a ceiling on the amount paid as filing fees by aspiring elected public officeholders.
He believes the high cost of election campaign is one of the causes of public sector corruption.
Speaking during the Domelevo Accountability Lectures organized by the Friedrich–Ebert Stiftung, he said the National Commission for Civic Education, (NCCE) can create a common campaign platform for politicians so they are not compelled to spend more money.
“The State can release money to NCCE and NCCE can create a common platform be it television, radio or rally grounds and our laws should put a ceiling on the amount that one must pay as a filling fee,” he said.
Daniel Domelovo says the cost of elections is the cost of Ghana’s corruption woes.
“It’s so much that they borrow money and then they use their own money to finance this and they recoup it with interest. The State may have to provide some resources for this, but not give the money to the people themselves,” he added.
Investigative Journalist, Manasseh Awuni was the guest speaker for the Maiden Edition of Domelevo Accountability Lectures. He says collaboration can help anti-graft agencies deal with the menace of corruption.
“Unfortunately there has been times that anti-corruption institutions and agencies have been used by the political class against one another.”
It was the former Auditor General, Daniel Domelevo second major speech after he was forced to retire from the Audit service by the President.
He says some of the employees from the Audit service who helped him to raise issues of financial impropriety against the former Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo Marfo have been demoted.
"The Deputy Auditor General who was in charge of Central government Audit which is the Ministries Audit to investigate, sent to Ministry of Finance as a Director. More or less, he has brought two steps lower. The Assistant Auditor General who led the Audit has been transferred to into the regions. In fact even the lawyer, who led the case in Court, the Director of Legal Service has been transferred as Cape Coast. He is now a District Director in Cape Coast,” he said.
