Black Stars skipper Andre Ayew says the Black Stars must earn the love and support of Ghanaians.
Ayew insists Ghanaians still love the Black Stars but are currently angry at the team because of recent performances and the lack of trophies.
The former Swansea City attacker likened the current relationship between Ghanaians and the senior national team to that of a man who loves his wife but is angry for some reason.
“I believe deep inside me that every single Ghanaian lobe the Black Stars. You can love your wife and be angry and I think that is the relationship between the Black Stars and Ghanaians.
Ayew added that he feels Ghanaians are waiting for the Black Stars to “give them something”.
“The feeling I’m having is that they’re waiting for us to give them something to spark. I feel it’s starting to come”.
He said the team is made up young talented players and experienced heads who are making the team attractive again. He reiterated the importance of having the support of Ghanaians but was quick to add that the support must be earned.
“We will need the support from our nation. We can’t sit here and tell them we will win or they should bet we’ll win it [the Afcon] but we need to feel they’re behind us. That is something we have to earn and I believe we’ve started on the right track by qualifying for the Afcon and if we give them a good run in the world cup qualifiers, the belief and confidence will be higher than it is currently.”
Ayew spoke on the Super Morning Show on Joy 99.7 Fm.
