The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has commissioned a dental clinic at the premise of the university’s hospital.
The facility will serve as a dental training centre for students pursuing dental surgery and also provide dental services to the community.
Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Prof. Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson, indicated the establishment of the facility forms part of the University’s mandate to providing professional training to students and enhancing the quality of healthcare delivery to neighboring communities.
“As the best and a leading science and technology university in Ghana, it’s our mandate to keep to and improve our standards.
“Therefore in our bid to train our students and to provide healthcare service to the community, we ensure that we always get it right.
“We are always going a step further to improve what we do as an institution, in our bid to improve and enhance the quality of life of the people that we serve,” she said.
Head of Clinical Dentistry of School of Dentistry-KNUST, Prof. Alexander Oti Acheampong said, the facility would help reduce the deficit of student-to-patient consultations.
“We won’t say that it’s enough for the current batch of students. Because of the free SHS, there’s going to be pressure on the intake.
“But this facility is better than before to reduce the student-to-patient deficit,” he said.
The newly commissioned facility has within its premise 10 dental chairs, 10 compressors, dental X-rays, sterilization unit, water distiller, and filling and drilling equipment.
The facility was birthed out of a partnership between the Dental school and the University hospital.
