The United Nations Secretary-General has called on Sudan's military to release the prime minister and "all other officials" immediately, in a Twitter post which condemned the coup.
He said that the constitutional charter must be respected in full, and said the citizens of Sudan have the international body's support.
I condemn the ongoing military coup in Sudan. Prime Minister Hamdok & all other officials must be released immediately. There must be full respect for the constitutional charter to protect the hard-won political transition. The UN will continue to stand with the people of Sudan.

Meanwhile, there was further condemnation from the UK government.
The country's minister for Africa tweeted that the coup was a "betrayal" of the Sudanese people and called on security forces to release the prime minister.
Today’s military coup in Sudan is an unacceptable betrayal of the Sudanese people and their democratic transition. Security forces must release PM Hamdok and other civilian leaders, and those who do not respect right to protest without fear of violence will be held to account.
