The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has commissioned a new maternity block extension at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Hospital in Kumasi.
The newly-commissioned facility will help reduce the mother-to-bed deficit as well as congestion at the maternity ward of the hospital.
The commissioning forms part of the university’s activities to commemorate its 70th anniversary.
Known as the Frank Awuah Adjei Maternity Block, it is expected to provide maternal care services to the university community and residents of neighboring communities.
The ultramodern facility was donated by magnate and philanthropist, Dr. Frank Awuah Adjei, hence the name.
“My wife and I thought of building a maternity block following our visit to a friend in a hospital. We were not pleased with what we saw so we decided to build this to support the government,” said Dr. Awuah.
He encouraged affluent Ghanaians to support the government in national development by replicating such a gesture.

“I’m hoping this maternity block would be used effectively to promote quality healthcare in Ghana. I’m encouraging all well-meaning Ghanaians to support the government with the little they have in building a better Ghana,” he added.
The new edifice would serve as an additional facility to the old maternity block within the precincts of the hospital.

The new maternity block extension houses well-equipped antenatal and postnatal facilities, a waiting hall, maternity wards, consulting rooms, washrooms, and storerooms.

Minister of Education, Dr. Osei Adu Twum, the Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson, and the Chairman of KNUST Council, Ambassador Nana Effah-Apenteng, assisted in the commissioning of the building.
