The Director of Advocacy and Policy Engagement at the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) Ghana has described it as unfair and a distraction an attempt by some MPs to haul its Executive Director before the Parliament's Privileges Committee.
Dr Kojo Asante Pumpuni described their posture as unfair and distractive to the hearing of the Bill.
Professor H. Kwasi Prempeh appearing before the Committee hearing the LGBTQ+ Bill on Thursday, argued that the promotion of the Bill was a march towards totalitarianism and populism.
The former law lecturer had expressed misgivings that the promotion of the Proper Human Sexual Rights Bill was a march towards totalitarianism and populism.
According to Ho West MP, Emmanuel Bedrah and Ningo Prampram MP, Sam George, Prof Kwasi Prempeh's remarks are insulting and blasphemous against MPs.
The MP’s also claim that the Executive Director of CDD had attempted to mislead the house.
“You don’t lie to a Committee of Parliament. If he did say on tape, during his submission, which we heard him say, that these thoughts were not the original thoughts but the thoughts of other people we were representing, we will drag him to Parliament,” Sam George told Evans Mensah on Joy FM’s Top Story on Thursday.
But in an interview with Joy News, the Director of Advocacy and Policy Engagement at the CDD criticised the position of the MPs.
“I think it’s a distraction. I’m really baffled by why this would be seen as insulting to anybody that it’s something that you are using on parliamentary. So you almost can’t even express your view.
"I really feel this is soo unfair, you know, I think that people are taking some of these things to heart, and they are not allowing it because the whole process of the hearing is to see perspective,” he told Joy News.
On Thursday, the Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament began the first of a series of public hearings on the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021.
The Bill, if passed in its current state, will criminalise Lesbianism, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and their related activities.
Over 140 memos have been presented to the committee so far regarding the Bill.
Meanwhile, the committee has temporarily suspended the public hearing citing time constraints as its reason.
