The MP for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has called on the security agencies to impose more stringent laws to curb the prevalent tensions in the area following recent clashes in the community.

There were gunshots in the early hours of Monday, December 27, 2021, which resulted in the loss of lives and the destruction of properties in the township.

This is the latest fight between the feuding factions – Mamprusis and Kusasis.

But speaking on the development in his constituency, Mr Ayariga said the enforcement of law and order is the prudent technique to avert future impasse in Bawku.

“The fundamental issue is the law enforcement. There’s really nothing beyond law enforcement, and if law enforcement institutions do their work, I’m sure that we’ll be able to deal with their problem.

“Those people obey the law, and if the law enforcement agencies treat it as a law enforcement matter and do their work, I’m sure we’ll be able to ensure law and order in all these communities.

"Throughout the year,s what I consider to be fundamentally the problem is that we have failed to enforce laws,” the lawmaker told Asaase Radio on Thursday.

Meanwhile, government has called on all stakeholders in the Bawku chieftaincy dispute to a ceasefire and resort to dialogue for calm to prevail.

In a statement issued by the Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Ministry, Ebenezer Kojo Kum insisted that the Supreme Court has settled the status of the Paramount Chief of Bawku; thus, until the Apex court set aside its initial pronouncement, the decision is binding to all and sundry.

He further called on proponents calling for installing a new Bawku Naba to desist from such actions.

“The status of the Paramount Chief of Bawku has been settled by the Supreme Court of Ghana in the celebrated case in April 2003.”

Also, through the Interior Ministry, government has renewed its curfew at Bawku through an Executive Instrument.

The new directive is to cease from 8 pm to 8 am daily, effective Wednesday, December 29.
