Mining firm Adamus Resources Limited has settled the medical bills of an illegal miner who sustained injuries from a fire on the firm's concession.
Popularly known as Budu, Michael Dery was in the company of others engaging in illegal mining within the Ebi-Teleku Bokazo Mining Lease at the Anwia-Teleku Bokazo pit area near the Anwia Community, when security officials of the company and a military regiment chanced upon them.
In his bid to escape, the victim ended up being caught up in a fire the illegal miners had lighted earlier.
He sustained injuries and was rescued and rushed to the Eikwe District hospital by the security officials present, where he was stabilised and began responding to treatment.
The unfortunate incident, as is expected of all law-abiding institutions, was then reported to the Esiama Divisional Police for investigations.
In a preliminary statement, the company described the happening as "sad and unfortunate", adding that “internal investigations into the happening had commenced."
It said the probe will be done "without prejudice to that of Police", with the company pledging its commitment to cooperate fully with state security to get to the bottom of the matter.
The statement also noted that, as a show of good faith to members of the community in which it operates, the company will bear the medical bills of the injured.
According to Adamus Resources Ghana Limited, body cameras had been purchased for all security officials to help them effectively carry out their role.
It stated that it will continue to work with all stakeholders to manage the scourge of illegal mining mostly known as ‘Galamsey’, which remains prevalent in the area.
