“Birdman” won big at the Oscars.
The celebrated film about a fading movie star trying to revitalize his career took home four major Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Directing, Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography.
Although Alejandro G. Iñárritu movie won no major acting awards, it beat out tough competitors like “Boyhood,” “The Theory of Everything” and “The Imitation Game.” In Iñárritu’s acceptance speech for Best Picture, he took special time to thank Michael Keaton, who played the film’s star Riggan Thomson, as well as the citizens of his home country Mexico.
The acting awards were in line with what the pundits were predicting: Eddie Redmayne won Best Actor for “The Theory of Everything” and Julianne Moore won Best Actress for “Still Alice.” It was the first Oscar for both of them. J.K Simmons won for Best Supporting Actor for “Whiplash” and Patricia Arquette won Best Supporting Actress for “Boyhood.” It was also the first Oscar for each.
Each of the eight Best Picture-nominated films won at least one award. “The Imitation Game” won Best Adapted Screenplay, while “Selma” won Original Song and “American Sniper” took Achievement in Sound Editing–its only win of the night. Wes Anderson‘s “Grand Budapest Hotel,” meanwhile, fared well in technical awards, winning Oscars for Costume Design, Makeup, Score and Production Design.
