Former Assistant Coach of the Black Stars, Ibrahim Tanko is anticipating what he refers to as a 'selection headache' for coach Otto Addo ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in the wake of recent nationality switches by some players.
Inaki Williams, Tariq Lamptey, Stephen Ambrosius, Patrick Pfeffer and Ransford Yeboah are headlined Ghanaian players in the diaspora who have switched nationality to play for the Black Stars.
Southampton defender, Mohammed Salisu, also made himself available for selection after declining several invitations by the senior national team in the past.
Speaking to Luv FM at the maiden edition of the Makam Inter-Tribal Football Gala in Kumasi, Ibrahim Tanko, who is coach of the Black Meteors, recognized the quality these players bring on board.
“In terms of quality, they are going to help us and since they are Ghanaians, I don’t see anything wrong with it,” he observed.
Ibrahim Tanko however noted that none of these players has a permanent place in the team, which leaves the coach with a difficulty in selection of his squad for the mondial.
“I don’t think they have a place in his squad so they also have to come and justify themselves.
“So, it’s going to be a tough decision for the coach because you have a pool of players to choose from, those who qualified and those who are coming, all of them are good.
“So, it’s a big headache for the coach, in terms of quality. It’s good and I think he has a very good squad to choose from, so the quality that came on board is going to help Ghana,” said Coach Tanko.
