The Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has hinted at a possible restoration of the symbolic celebration of September 21 in Ghana’s history as Founder’s Day.
Dr Peter Boamah Otokunor who is an aspiring General Secretary of the party said the day is to celebrate the life and contributions of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
Prior to 2017, Ghana had commemorated Founder’s Day on Dr Nkrumah’s birthday, September.
However, after ascending office, President Akufo-Addo made amendments with regard to some statutory holidays and their corresponding significance in the history of Ghana.
Government through legislation designated August 4, as Founders’ Day, while making September 21, which was originally observed as Founder's Day, become Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day.
But Dr Otokunor has clearly reiterated his position on the recognition of Dr Kwame Nkrumah as the Founder of modern Ghana and the father of our liberation.
“It is evidently clear that our liberation was not achieved by one person. Our history really acknowledges all those who contributed to our independence and we continue to celebrate their contributions to our history.
"But the fact remains that Dr Kwame Nkrumah has played a very pivotal role and became an integral part of leading our country to gain independence despite the many challenges he faced during the struggle.
“Just like Nelson Mandela of South Africa, We Ghanaians must offer Dr Kwame Nkrumah the place he rightly deserves in our history and it is enormously justifiable to celebrate him as the founder of modern Ghana,” he said.
He further added, “I believe that the next NDC government will take necessary legislative steps to consolidate the two public holidays and recognise the African of the millennium as our founder.”
Dr Otokunor noted that he will continue to observe the day as such until a future NDC government officially restores the commemoration through proper legislation.
