The Ghana Mines Workers Union has joined calls for the review of all extractives tax regimes in the 2023 budget to ensure Ghana derives adequate benefits from the sector.
According to its General Secretary, Abdul Moomin-Gbana, based on the current economic situation of the country, it is imperative for the introduction of new tax regimes to boost the sector’s revenue contribution to the economy.
Speaking to Joy Business ahead of the 2023 budget on Thursday, November, 24, Abdul Moomin-Gbana said this is the time the mining companies must contribute their quota to supporting the growth of the economy.
“We need to be a bit more patriotic at this point. The extractive sector particularly the mining sector is a major contributor to the economy of this country, but we have gotten to a stage where we need them to show a lot more faith given how the growth price has fared.”
He added that at the moment the concern is how to bring the economy back on its feet.
“The expectation is that we must all be seen supporting the growth of the economy”, Mr. Moomin-Gbana said.
