The Secretary-General for the National Tenants' Union of Ghana, Frederick Opoku, has said that the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government is digging a grave for the future of the party.
According to him, decisions made by the current leadership may affect the credibility of the party.
The Saglemi housing project, which commenced under the Mahama administration in 2012, was stalled due to a decision by the Akufo-Addo administration to probe the financial arrangements surrounding it.
Speaking on the Saglemi housing project issues on Prime Morning, on Wednesday, Mr. Opoku revealed that the union has granted the government an ultimatum of two months to fix the project as they are planning to organize a yearlong demonstration against the NPP government.
This, according to him, may create opportunities for the NDC to win in the upcoming election in 2024 due to some decisions made by President Akufo-Addo.
"In our response, we gave the government two months beginning January 15th. If the government does not receive it and so boldly go ahead with it, what will be seen in this country has never been seen. It’s not going to be like a one day demonstration, we’re having it a whole one year. Every month, we move from one region to the next until.
"NPP should advise the President that he’s digging a grave for the future of the party. NDC will take advantage of the ills and the indecisions of the President, and I’m sad to see the antics that they’re playing; they’re digging and they’re damaging their own party, and that is very unfortunate," he explained to KMJ on Wednesday.
He stated that the NPP's regime has failed to improve housing projects in the country for the past six years.
The Secretary-General has therefore cautioned the Akufo-Addo-led government not to involve private individuals in the Saglemi housing project.
The project was intended to build 5,000 housing units but was halted due to allegations of misappropriation of funds.
