The oldest basic school in Bekwai Municipality in the Ashanti Region has held its maiden Graduation, Speech and Prize-Giving Day at its school premises.

The ceremony was held under the theme, "Discipline in our schools, challenges and the way forward".

The event, which was held on Tuesday, December 13, 2022, saw the successful graduation of thirty students from the kindergarten and the Upper Primary level of the Bekwai Presby basic school with overwhelming smiles and joy as they move to the next step in their educational ladder.

Former Education Minister in 1976, Ellis Owusu-Fordwouh spoke on the theme and elaborated on the reasons why indiscipline among the youth is increasingly spreading among children in Ghana.

In his speech, he emphasised that indiscipline has increased due to the manner in which parents and guardians handle issues in their homes when children go wayward.

He advocated for ultimate love and constant counselling as key factors in nurturing the youth and children for a brighter future.

The District Presbytery Pastor, Rev Philip Pinto also added that discipline is very important and must be a key concern to students, parents, teachers, the church and the country as a whole.

He said all stakeholders must unite to fight indiscipline as a matter of urgency.

The chairman of the event, Bekwai Twafo-Benkumhene Nana Wireko Appiah who was extremely happy about the students’ performance, blamed the government for indiscipline among the youth by setting up laws that are undermining the customs and traditions.

In an exclusive interview with Joy Learning Channel, the headmistress, Rebecca Eshun explained that despite the numerous successes in their school, the key challenge encountered is the lack of electricity connection to their school.

She said electricity connection would have helped students to learn basic computing skills to prepare them for the technological age.

She pleaded with the government, old students and the general public for urgent help, adding that teachers and students also struggle to use a devastating toilet facility in the school.

Speaking to some of the award-winning graduates in Bekwai Presbyterian Basic School, they expressed their gratitude to the Joy Learning Channel for the continuous television learning experience since it started airing.

They also lamented about their facilities and pleaded for urgent help.
