General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, says the Akufo-Addo-led government’s lack of credibility is what has led the country into an economic ditch.

According to him, the government had failed to be honest with the people of Ghana concerning the true state of the economy, and continues to fail in same regard even during the economic downturn.

He believes that had the government come clean on the true state of the economy and sought timely help from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) it could have avoided some of the draconian fiscal measures it has had to implement in pursuance of debt relief.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, he said, “Where we are today is simply a result of the complete collapse as far as what we call the credibility of this government is concerned. So the chickens are just coming home to roost.

“Every single thing shows that the problem we’re having today is simply because they have lied right from the beginning, and have persisted in that lie, and that lie has simply caught up with them and today they have nowhere to hide.

“But the sad thing is you would have thought that with all the problems they’ve had this is the moment where they say, ‘enough, I’ve lied enough. Let me now finally start telling the truth. Let me start telling people the truth exactly, let them know that you know what, I was even lying about the deficits in the past, I was lying about economic numbers because I just wanted to look good.’

“At the end of the day, if they had told for example the truth about the real deficit of the country and how that was getting so astronomical, they would have sort the help of IMF.”

Fifi Kwetey is adamant the government’s “arrogance which is simply built on their deception” is what has led the country into this situation, and has thus called on the government to come clean on the true state of the economy.

“And they were so arrogant, ‘we don’t need IMF, we’re a proud nation, we’re capable of reviving the economy’ and all that arrogance which is simply built on their deception is eventually what has led us to this catastrophic situation,” he said.
