The National Communications Director of the National Democratic (NDC) has urged the Council of State to reconsider its decision in endorsing two of the newly elected Electoral Commission members - Dr. Peter Appiahene and Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani.
According to him, the Council of State reconsidering its decision would be critical in demonstrating to the good people of this country and the international community that they care about national interests.
This, Sammy Gyamfi explained in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Wednesday, is because the appointment has set a bad precedence.
For this reason, he cautioned the Council of State to act.
“We think that it is totally wrong for this Council of State to go down in record or in history as having endorsed the appointment of this partisan characters to the EC,” he said.
“If for nothing at all, for the sake of posterity, we are appealing to their conscience that you reconsider your position in the light of this evidence that we are providing to you,” he added.
This appeal comes after the NDC earlier petitioned the Council of State to reconsider its advice to Akufo-Addo over his recent appointments to EC.
Article 70(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires such appointments to be made in consultation with the Council, and the NDC believes the Council can influence the President to reverse the appointments.
Meanwhile, several voices have spoken against the appointment of Dr Peter Appiahene and Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani to the EC board, claiming the two are politically tainted and unfit for an institution required to be politically neutral.
Due to this, Sammy Gyamfi believes that if the Council of State fail to act on the petition, then “they [Council of State] would go down in history as the Council that recommended the appointment of such partisan characters into the EC. Something that has never happened in the history of this country.”
